Straight from the foot of Nicaragua’s tallest volcano comes Flor de Caña Gold Rum. Flor de Caña rum is aged four years by way of a proprietary “slow-aging” process that ensures the accuracy and consistency of the aging process. The rum is aged in small, white oak barrels under natural climatic conditions. These small barrels have been used only one time prior to maintain the unique taste of Flor de Caña rum.
Flor de Caña directly translates to “Flower of the Cane,” and it truly is a delicious flower at that. It has a very rich and almost caramel coffee-like aroma that is very pleasing to both alcoholics and caffeine addicts alike. The taste is rather rich and smooth. You can taste the barrel flavor goodness as it goes down your throat, and the alcohol warms its way gently back up to the mouth. The after taste is a very pleasant, almost tropical flavor.
Flor de Caña Gold is fairly pleasant to sip on the rocks, but where it really shines is in its mixability. This rum is truly one of the most delicious rums to mix with a cola of choice. When mixed with Coke©, it gives you that wonderfully sugary, almost dirty taste you come to expect from a rum and cola. It’s the kind of taste that seems to beg you to come to Nicaragua to work hard in the factories for small wages just so you can visit the cantina after a hard day’s work for several of these bad boys. Perhaps it’s just me. Maybe I just like saying “Nicaragua.” Flor de Caña Gold and cola is so smooth and delicious to consume that you may decide that your favorite cola no longer appeals to you without a hefty helping of Flor de Caña Gold.
For such a tasty beverage, Flor de Caña Gold and cola packs an impressive punch. The buzz from this rum is a smooth and fluffy one. It was almost unrecognizable at first, but then I felt as though I was wrapped in cool, soft pillows. Since Flor de Caña Gold gives you a relaxed and calm kind of drunk, you may want to let that friend who is an annoying, angry drunk try this stuff rather than tequila. Instead of being thrown out of the bar for instigating a brawl, he may be carted off for passing out in the corner with a serene smile across his face.
Flor de Caña Gold is not the most inexpensive rum out there, but at around $19 for a fifth (750mL), it should still leave you with plenty of cash in your wallet to bail that angry drunk amigo out of prison when he manages to somehow still get into a fight.
Flor de Caña Gold did leave me with a moderate case of dry mouth the next morning, but the expected headache was not present. All in all, Flor de Caña Gold is an excellent choice for both budget-conscious drinkers and high-brow liquor snobs alike.

First chance I get, I’m buying a bottle of this.
this rum aint nothin compared to flor de cana’s gran reserva (seven years in the barrell).
In nicaragua, the rum you buy there is 70 proof but they export the regular 80 proof stuff. i lived there for a year and the upper crust managuans don’t even drink flor de cana. they drink johnny walker and finlandia. all i got to say is more flor for me
I’ve seen the 7-year stuff, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve heard good things though. It’s definitely on the list of things to review. I’ve heard that the 12-year is incredible too. I was just really blown away by the good flavor of Flor de Caña Gold for such a cheap price. It’s really heaven with a splash of Coke. I try to keep it permanently stocked at home. Cheers.
I just got back from spending a month scuba diving in Utila, Honduras. I fiend for Flor de Cana. So tasty. So fulfilling. So perfect after a long day of lugging around heavy dive gear. Ah, yes. Yum.
I have been thoroughly impressed with everything Flor de Cana makes. I still have a bottle of the Centenario 12-year (well, half a bottle), and “fantastic” is only a good start. You don’t even need the coke. Or ice for that matter. Bacardi lost a customer once I discovered that I could get better rum for less money.
Great review of a great rum. Flor de Cana’s 4 year old rums are both fantastic, although only the gold works for sipping. Their 5, 7, 12, 15, and 18 improve with the additional years. The only caveat I will include has to do with the 15 year old or 21 as it is called. It comes in special packaging, is the most expensive of the lot, and it’s name lends some to think it is actually 21 years old. However, the 18 year old is truly the best and is way better priced than the 15. One last note designed to arouse bitter jealousy: my local Costco liquor store sells 1.75 ml of the gold for $16. They have the same size of the 7 year for $35. Too good to be true. Fortunately for me, it is true.
That’s a good deal. I can actually pick up a 750ml bottle at the local Wal-mart liquor store for $13. It’s a staple on my shelf.
Me too, I went to local liquor store and I saw Flor de Caña Gold only for $13. so I pick one up right away. However I can’t find the Flor de Caña Grand Reserve 7 anywhere….too bad
You need to prove the 18 yrs is not easy to find but it is exquisite.
$36 to $48
Whomever said that the upper crust Nicaraguans don’t drink Flor de Cana is incorrect. I don’t know who you know but some of the wealthiest business men, diplomats and politicians drink Flor.
I’m a huge fan of the 4 year gold….I discovered Flor while spending 2.5 years living in Costa Rica Its the best rum on the market….anyone know where I can get it in South Florida (Pompano area?)
Ok, this is really good stuff. I put it in my strawberry daiquiri for a party I threw. Needless to say people were singing, dancing, crying, and taking their clothes off as well. I must have blended about 24 daiquiris that night. Thank you Flor de Caña!
I’ll take a quote from Snapple… “made from the best stuff on earth”. This stuff rocks in everything from straight shot all the way up to mixed drinks and including the national nicaraguan drink “The Macua” which is only made with Flor. As Hunter said i get no hangover and it does carry a subtle but potent punch. I usually have this stuff stocked. Although i must say the Black Label and 7 Year Gran reserva are my favorite. Drop some into a pitcher of Pitahaya and you wont even know its there..
And for all those Nica’s who don’t drink it… shame on you…..
If you think 13.50 isnt bad, try 4.50 (they took US dollars) at the texaco station outside Manaugua.
Get rid of the Bacardi-this stuff has no equal! Been drinking for about a year and it is simpy awesome.
Flor de Caña products, which I’ve tried everyone of…, are the greatest…
Up until 2 years ago, I was a dinker of various liqueurs from Johnny, Jack, Canadian Club, Tequila and others… I always had ho have a bottle of each of those. That is, until I found on a trip, “Flor de Caña”, and the wonderful array of selection and flavors. As I entertain allot of people/customers, needless to say, I let them try this golden secrete.
Now I have to special order a box of each “Flor de Caña”, straight from Nicaragua.
I have been to Central America numerous times and every time I go I bring back a case of the 1.75L of 7 yr old and a bottle or two of the 18 and 25 yr old. Its delicious. Enough said.
