Liquor Review: Jack Daniel’s

Jack Daniel's     If you drink, you know him.  If you don’t drink, you have heard of him.  No matter if he is called JD, one of the horsemen, or just Jack (for those of us who know him closely), everyone knows of Mr. Daniel’s, Jack Daniel’s.  At the Jack Daniel’s distillery, it is believed that experience determines maturity.  It is what a whiskey experiences while inside the barrel and not simply how long it has been there that gives it the rich color, character, and taste.  This time in the barrel is what matures the spirit.  Mellowing the whiskey through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal, carefully crafted barrels, and carefully placing it in the barrelhouse all contribute to how Jack Daniel’s whiskey matures.  Age, by itself, is not a reliable measure of a whiskey’s quality and character, which is why there are tasters working day and night to determine when the whiskey is ready.

If smoothness is what you crave, JD can give James Bond a run for his money.  This whiskey is smoother than baby oil (please do not try to rub down babies with Jack Daniel’s; that would be a waste of good liquor).  Jack is great for drinking alone.  Wait, let me rephrase that…Jack is great to simply sip with ice when you are alone.  The sad part is, when it’s mixed, it starts to lose a little bit of that delicious whiskey flavor.  But with that said, if you are drinking JD straight, it rates a solid 7.5.  Drinking it mixed is merely a 7.0.  This whiskey is good no matter how you take it.  Belive me, you want to take this one. Just try to avoid filling the bathtub up with ice and making the biggest size of delicious whiskey possible.  Besides, you are going to lose a good 300ml down the drain due to seep through, and your landlord won’t pay you back for the whiskey that got away.  Then you end up in a big fight and get kicked out of your home.  Well, I mean, I don’t know myself, but I belive that is what would happen.  But I do feel I’m still owed a bottle from a certain landlord.

Make no mistake, Jack Daniel’s can and will get you drunk as quick as a 50 dollar bill will get a stripper topless (Again, I don’t know from personal experince…okay, I’m lying about that one.  I love you, strippers!).  And at the price of $27 for a 750mL bottle, it’s a sure bet.  Just be careful, Jack Daniel’s tastes good, but it is a whiskey.  And with every good whiskey drunk comes a good whiskey hangover.  There is a good chance that this one will have you crawling on your knees and praying to the porcelain god if you have one to many.  Right now, I know what you are thinking, “Is the hangover worth it?”  The answer is, YES.  Yes, in a special way that many may never understand.

This whiskey is a staple for any home bar.  And if you have never tried whiskey before, this is a great place to start.  Should you go out and drink a whole bottle of the stuff right now?  That is up to you.  I would.  But then again, my bathtub has yet to lose the smell.  So Grab $30, and go get yourself a bottle.  Then you can be a part of the exclusive club that can say I spent a night with Jack, and I’ll never be the same.

Youre right, this whiskey IS the best. I guess I drink a bottle a week and I really have to hold myself back from drinking more. Excellent stuff! Hangover? Whats that? I mix it 1/3 JD to 2/3 coke with ice and LEMON! Laugh at me, but a splash of lemon is what makes it even more enjoyable. And it kills the hangover. Cheers to JD

I drink a whole bottle of this stuff at a time, straight.
    And never get a hangover.

Good whiskey?!?!? Puhleeze. This marginal-at-best hooch is an excellent example of what good marketing will do for a mediocre product. Speaking as a whiskey drinker FROM TENNESSEE,
-where this vile concoction is made-
I’d advise you to drive into Kentucky and get a small-batch bourbon (Knob Creek or something similar) when you’re in the mood to have a sip of the ‘brown devil’.
Heck, it even says ’sour’ on the bottle… end of story.

hey highball you can shove that kentucky crap up your ass “knob creek” is the worst shit there is. You can say it even taste a little “canadian” long live the south long live tennesse sour mash

JD is an acquired taste. I acquired it back in 1978 when I took my first sip. I have drank a lot of other stuff from vodka, gin, tequila, bourbon to scotch and in all price ranges. Old No. 7 is the only one I come back to for pure sippin’ pleasure.

Hello, I am Justin from New York. I am 24 years old, and I started drinking Jack Daniels when I was in college. I’ve drank quite a few bottles of the stuff, but it’s still pretty nasty when u drink it straight. How long does the “aquired” taste take? Currently Jack Daniels is the only liquor i drink, it fucks me up fast and doesn’t taste too bad. It has a cool history which can’t be beat, right?

JD is a so-so whiskey. Its not bad but isnt particularly great either: there’s plenty of whiskeys out there with greater depth of flavour and with a smoother finish. JD is a good starting point for the whiskey drinker but from there the only way is up For me, Makers Mark and Monkey shoulder are making a regular appearance over ice.

i have done a lot of travelling over the years and finally settled in the BAHAMAS but i was always able to get my favourite tipple wherever i went.

This is by far my favorite alcohol ever produced, let alone whiskey. I can drink a bottle of this to myself and still be ready to drink another one. It’s always sad when the bottles empty. And what about a hangover? Never gotten one from my dear friend Jack

Perhaps its because I come from Tennessee and there’s so much of this stuff floating around, but I never saw what all the hype was about. I love the taste, but I still believe Maker’s Mark has it beat by miles. I can’t travel outside of the country and tell a bartender I’m from Tennessee without hearing “Like Jack Daniel’s?” in response (I usually nod my head and order a glass of Johnnie Walker on the rocks, after this). But, Jack Daniel’s is definitely a good liquor and a great one to take to any party because of its mixability with Coke.

For a nice bit of trivia: The Jack Daniel’s distillery is located in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Lynchburg is a dry country and the only liquor that can be purchased is at the distillery in special “commemorative” bottles.

The acquired taste comes from the very first sip. Try it neat or on the rocks some time. It’s sippin’ whiskey. If you want a buzz, there are cheaper ways. And, please, please, please, please … don’t mix it with Coke. Try educating your taste buds rather than killing them with syrup.

I’m 19 but I’ll be 20 Feb 28th and tonight I just got my first old number 7. At first I mixed a little Pepsi with it but after I got a slight buzz it was fine taking stright. I only drank half a bottle cause since I ain’t familar with it I don’t want a hang over but I must say its a great sipper and I feel decent for the little amount. Only thing I ever had that was better is some Tennesse Moonshine. About 7oz worth had me feeling like I do now but since I live in Dayton Ohio I don’t get it often and it goes for $100 a gallon but I guess its worth it cause it ain’t no crap made from a car raditor that will poison you,,Cheers This ones to Jack

One more comment,,,How come you have to be 21 to drink a beer but at 18 you can join the army and die

  18. Todd
    9 February 3:47 pm

Tennesse whiskey is unregulated by the government. What goes in it and what comes out are not guarded by law. Therefore, thye have switched from charcoal filtering to charcoal leeching. eeek! Charcoal. Sour Mash, hmmm aren’t all whiskies including the scots using sour mash to carry consistency? You might as well put sour dough on the bottle.

The whiskey is good but the label it to much marketing. Make what is the bottle taste good. Even if you have to add caramel for flavoring.

Make it pure, Drink it Pure

you can never go wrong with good ol’ No. 7. It’s got a smooth smokey taste and gets to work fast. Really good with DIET coke. sure there’s better whiskeys out there but they also cost more. Don’t even say Maker’s Mark; it’s good but not that good

Jack was my first whiskey. I’ve had a few other kinds in my time, but I can always go back to Jack. I drink it neat, on the rocks, or mixed with Dr. Pepper, which I would say is the best thing you could possibly mix JD with. Seriously, the two mix so perfectly. They should sell bottles of it pre-mixed.

    16 March 10:22 pm

Okay I have to say, this was the first whisky I ever tasted in my life..I bought a bottle in college and brought it back to my dorm and took out my roommates highball and drank it neat.. It was quite possibly the most revolting experience I ever had in my life. However today I sip it like it’s liquid candy. I have to say it really is an acquired taste, but I guess to any whisky fanatics or experienced drinkers - the first sip must be different. So I’ve explored Sotches, Canadian Whisky, and some other American Whiskys and bourbons. I have to say for it’s price, and overall drinkability/etc … Jack Daniel’s wins. But if money grew on trees - I’d have to say it’d be one damn close tie with JD’s and a good scotch.

I’m Scottish, and I have to say that Jack Daniel’s cannot hold a flame to Jim Beam, as far as American Whiskies and Bourbons go.

Jim Beam is my second-favourite whisky after Johnnie Walker black, I’d recommend either of these over the popular trend that is Jack Daniels.

I’ll still Drink JD, it’s not awful at all, but it’s nowhere near as good as the aforementioned whiskies, or a few other select options I can think of.

It’s still a good starter whisky, and I’d recommend it if someone else has it going, but Jim is cheaper and it’s a much better whisky.

    Enjoy.

    Gregor.

I should add that as I type this, I am enjoying a double of Jim Beam on ice.

    S’good.

Along with Jim Beam, this is one of the best-known whiskies. As with Jim Beam, this is one of the most overrated and overpriced whiskies. Jack Daniel’s is not a bourbon, though a lot of ignorant whiskey drinkers, bartenders, and restaurateurs don’t know or realize that. I used to drink Jack (long ago), but I now consider it way too sweet.

The logical question concerning Jack Daniel’s is why: this stuff costs about $30 for a fifth and it’s not even small batch production. In addition, the proofage was recently dropped from 86 to 80. Notoriety and brand loyalty, I suppose.

best whiskey ever, I drink this straight all the time. Jim Beam is Kentucky horse piss compare to Jack. Definitely not overrated and lives up to the hype. Best part is it’s only $20 a fifth

if you want a solid whiskey with a great taste that isnt watered down, go with the kicken chicken, wild turkey 101

or for smoothness sake makers mark.

jack is not bad but its not as pleasant to drink straight up

  32. Johnny
    8 November 4:54 pm

Jack is mediocre at best. If you piss in a fancy bottle and market it well aren’t you still drinking piss? For the price the taste isn’t too shabby, but there are better choices. I’ve tasted many different brands of whiskey. Nothing compares to Johnnie Walker. Maker’s Mark and the Turkey are also up there. Jack is below even Ten High in my book, and Ten High is just a little under ten bucks for a 750 mL bottle.

  33. 10 November 10:30 pm

I tried this at a bar and the taste was so damn bad that it took my about 10 mintues to finish the little shot.

  34. Philip
    13 November 3:58 pm

Jack Daniels is the poster boy for overrated whiskey. Jack Daniels reminds me of Harley-Davidson. Mediocrity at best that shows what advertising can do in the marketplace among nondiscerning consumers. I ride a Kawasaki KLR and I can blow away a H-D Sportster on the street and then do it far worse damage on a gravel road. Probably why all the branches of our military use KLR based motorcycles. I paid about half of what a Sportster costs, and got a better motorcycle, although with less chrome. Same goes for Jack Daniels. For less money, I can buy Teacher’s Highland Cream blended scotch that walks all over Jack Daniels. J&B Rare, Famous Grouse, White Horse, even Johnnie Walker Red……I will take them any day over Jack Daniels. If needing an American whiskey, I could buy Jim Beam White or Evan Williams and have something similar in quality and save a lot of money to boot. I often pass Montana bars and casinos and see Harley-Davidsons lined up in a row outside, but to this day I have still yet to see a single Harley-Davidson in a “real” Montana place like deep in the Missouri Breaks on a dirt road 30 miles from the nearest highway. The KLR takes you to places that real motorcyclists dream about, while Harley-Davidson riders are mostly seen as poseurs and wannabes to those of us who ride KLR’s (many of which are ex-Harley riders). Same goes for decent scotch whisky. It has far more taste and variability than bourbon or Tennesee whiskey, and will take your taste buds to places those two can never achieve.
