Malibu rum got its beginnings in the early 1980s on the small island of Barbados. As a matter of fact, Barbados is considered the birthplace of rum. Naturally flavored with coconut, the spirit also boasts a slight hint of almonds and mocha. This baby is definitely a tasty rum to have in your collection. The coconut flavor adds the perfect touch to the rum, giving it a sweet, relaxing mood. You coconut haters out there don’t need to fret about this one; even you folks will like it, as the coconut flavoring is anything but overpowering.
I thoroughly enjoyed partaking in this sweet nectar of the gods. Sipping it on ice proved to be a great choice; the drink goes down almost as smooth as water, giving it a very high sipability rating. Mixing it with pineapple juice also tasted great. Although, the pineapple juice did make it a little too sweet. Despite the extra sweetness, I decided to indulge in more rum and pineapple concoctions. Mixing this rum with just about any fruit will prove to be a real crowd pleaser.
After the standard four drinks, I felt practically as sober as when I started drinking. What else would you expect from a 42 proof spirit? In fact, the Malibu website mentions the low alcohol content as an attempt to help you “stay in control.” Honestly, I would probably need to consume about 10 mixed drinks to get a good buzz going. Obviously, the drunkability factor for this one is pretty low.
The next morning I felt as if I hadn’t even gone out drinking at all. No hangover. No dry mouth. No feeling of uselessness. Nothing. So, if you’re looking for a sweet, tasty rum that won’t leave you feeling like a zombie the next morning, this one’s for you.
The Boozebasher crew actually had a couple of female guests to participate in the sampling of the rum. Both ladies gave it an overall rating of ten, claiming it was very smooth, light, and had a great taste. If you’ve got some ladies who like rum, make sure you have this one on hand, as I’m sure they’ll become your best friends as a result.
The only complaint I had about the rum is the low drunkability factor. If you want a good buzz from it, you’d probably be better off shooting it rather than sipping it. Although, at a low cost of $16, it’s definitely worth trying at least once; even if you just keep it around for when the ladies show up. The good news is it comes in 5 tasty flavors: mango, pineapple, passion fruit, banana, and of course, coconut. Cheers!

For another coconut rum fix, also try: “Bacardi CoCo”. It manages to pack in 35% alcohol (70 proof) for slightly less cost per bottle, with a trade off of a slightly less sophisticated flavor. At 50%/50% with pinapple juice and it can degrade even a seasoned alcoholic such as myself to a quiescent stooper in no time.
This has always been one of my favorites. It’s just so good with Coke.
This may have changed, but I remember when different sized bottles were of different proof: I believe the smaller bottle was 58 proof or something of the sort. Not sure if this is still the case, but the stronger proof was definitely preferable because it had just the right extra bite that made it perfect over ice.
I never really went for Malibu, it smells and tastes kinda “bleachy” and artificial to me, not as much as disgusting Parrot Bay Mango, but nevertheless not to my liking and way too low on alcohol. I suggest Bacardi Coco for that 70 proof kick or try Cruzan flavored rums which are 55 proof and come in Banana, Coconut, Raspberry, and other flavors and taste far more natural than anything Malibu or Parrot Bay make.
At my Rum Project Forum (linked on my name above), my partner Sue Sea and I have reviewed over 60 great rums. I’m not too much on Malibu Coconut, but their Vanilla is super. The Brinley Coffee and also their Vanilla even better.
Sad fact is, there is really no good real coconut flavored rum, you’re better off making your own with some fresh coconut (pretty easy here in Florida).
Do stop by the Forum (our main Rum Project website is linked in any of the reviews and covers how to taste rum, tasting glasses, suggested starter collection, etc.).
Unlike most liquor, this stuff actually tastes good. lol
