Liquor Review: Torada

Torada Tequila     Torada Tequila - The Spirit of Old Mexico is imported and bottled by The Sazerac Company.  ”A distillate of the blue agave.”  That’s right off of the bottle.  A distillate made with how much agave?  Is this really tequila?  We’re in for a rough ride.

I would describe the Torada tequila experience like snorting a wasp, chewing it, and then swallowing it, except that it’s an alcoholic wasp.  The first whiff is best described by a line from Anchorman - the Legend of Ron Burgundy, “It stings the nostrils.”  Yes, it literally stung my nostrils.  I think I lost some of my sense of smell from it, at least I didn’t have any itching or swelling like an actual sting would cause.  Once I got past that, the tequila smelt pretty generic and mild.  There were no other scents of oak, spice, or earthiness; just 80 proof tequila and alcohol.

Let’s continue the journey of the wasp down into our mouth where it continues to sting and sting again.  Not being the one to stand for this, you chew up the little bastard and swallow him out of spite.  Shooting this tequila is very much the same thing.  The result is a burning tongue and a disgusted look on your face.  The only difference being the alcohol burn you feel on the way down and the drunkenness you experience soon afterwards.  Thus ends our little wasp’s journey.

Mixing up this tequila with Sprite© yielded more unpleasant results.  The tequila powered through the sweet, lemon-lime soda.  I just couldn’t handle it.  I had to make a margarita out of this stuff.  I just used a margarita mix you can pick up at any store.  That produced a much better drink.  I had no problems handling those for the remainder of the night.  After a couple, I could definitely feel a buzz, but there was something else coming.  I started to develop a headache.  I ignored it and deadened it with more margaritas.  I sure did pay for it the next day.  I had a severe case of dry mouth and an aching head.  I was hung-over for most of the day.  Not even a hot shower helped this bad-boy of a hangover.

At only $12 at your local liquor store for a 750ml bottle, this stuff is dirt cheap and it tastes that way.  If you and your friends like tequila and getting drunk on it for cheap, this is the stuff for you.  I mean it does make an okay margarita.  Be warned, you will pay for it the next day.  I would go for something a little higher on the shelf.

I totally disagree with Dan’s review. i have been a tequila drinker for over thirty years. i have tried Don Julio, Cabo Waba, and the more tame domestic Sauza and such and I actually prefer Torada blanco- the tequila pictured. It is the best Tequila for the buck and even my fiancee agrees that it is better than Sauza and lots better than Jose guervo.

Senior Karlos, don’t take this the wrong way but I think you must be crazy. We absolutely hated this stuff! It would probably not be bad if you drown out the flavor with lime in a margarita, but other wise I just cannot see myself drinking it. Dan still has almost half a bottle because he cannot even pawn it off on hapless guests at his house.

I actually agree with Senor Karlos. I love the stuff. I love putting about 8 ice cubes in a big tall plastic Marshall University cup, filling it to the top with Torada, the one pictured, and dropping in two straws. Sipping slowly, until I get the kahunas up to take down the whole thing in one big drink.

    LOVE IT.

Tailgating season is here, cheap stuff taste the bests, especially when you look at your wallet the next day.

    GO HERD
    GO TORADA
