Seagram’s Extra Smooth Vodka (I know the link is to their gin, but they don’t have a site for their vodka spirit) was launched in early 2003 in order to compete with current mid-shelf vodkas. To set itself apart from other middle-shelfers out there, Seagram’s Vodka is made from the finest American grain with no additives and is distilled at a higher proof by a continuous five column process. This unique process allows for no charcoal filtering in the end product.
That being said, sipping Seagram’s Vodka was no treat. I suppose the vodka was smooth going down, as it did not really burn, but the flavor of the spirit was absolutely deplorable! I’m not really sure what they were shooting for with the taste of this stuff, but the only thing that comes to mind for me is rubbing alcohol. The pungent taste lingered even minutes after consuming the spirit. I was so displeased with the taste that I vowed to never drink the stuff again. Unfortunately, I had to sip more of it after the fact to write this review. If you have a decent bone in your body, you will sympathize with my situation. To sum up the taste, Seagram’s Vodka is ”extra smooth” like a 50-year-old man at a teen-infested nightclub: he may present himself as smooth and attractive, but he’s bound to disappoint on the dance floor.
When I mixed Seagram’s Vodka with Sprite©, the “smooth” rubbing-alcohol flavor still came through at wretched full force. The taste of the mixed drink was totally overpowered by the repugnant zip of rubbing alcohol. Even juices didn’t do much to mask the offensive taste. I found it hard to believe this spirit was ever marketed in the middle-shelf market, as there are plenty of bottom-shelf varieties of vodka that make much better mixed drinks. The girl used for our chick-appeal rating was utterly disgusted by the taste, and we here at BoozeBasher found it hard to give kudos to a vodka that the ladies wouldn’t enjoy in a delicious fruity beverage.
I failed to attain much of a buzz from the consumption of Seagram’s Extra Smooth Vodka even after forcing myself to down four drinks. I refused to drink any more after the standard four. Even at $10 for 750mL, this liquor isn’t much fun to consume. I’m not really sure how it happened since I didn’t get drunk, but I was left with a noticeable headache the next day. This makes me think that if you can stomach a good deal more of this in an evening than I did, you would probably find yourself praying to the porcelain god the next morning. Even at its low price, I’d opt out of Seagram’s Vodka for a better bottom-shelf selection. I’m assuming Seagram’s too has accepted defeat for their vodka spirit since they fail to market it with even a website. That’s never a good sign.
