Free Beer! Yup, free beer is what you get if you visit the Blue and Gray Brewing Company for a Saturday tour and tasting. The Blue and Gray Brewery is a very small micro-brewery located in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia that opened its doors in March of 2002. The brewery only employs about 5 people and offers 4 basic flavors. However, it is all about quality, not quantity here people. I sampled the Falmouth Pale Ale, Fred Red Ale, and the Classic Lager and found the Pale Ale to be quite pleasing to my pallet. These guys also brew up a variety of seasonal beers that are only offered for a limited time. I was lucky enough to catch them doling out an Imperial Stout. It was similar in taste to Guinness, but not quite as bitter and as a result went down rather quickly. I am not sure what the alcohol content of this stout is, but I do know that she packs a punch and is aptly named Temporary Insanity. Throughout the Christmas season, they also offer a Cranberry Ale. I can not say that I thought the Cranberry Ale was anything special, but one of the BoozeBasher staff’s female tasters thouroughly enjoyed it, and we picked up a few bottles for later consumption.

One of the best things about the Blue and Gray Brewing Company is that they offer discounted site sales in bottle, keg, and growler form. Never heard of a growler? Well, imagine one of those recloseable beer bottles, like the container in which Grolsch is sold. Now imagine that it holds 67oz. instead of just 12oz. Yup, you read that right, these growlers hold 2 liters of golden happiness. For about $24, you can pick up one with the brewery’s logo on it. For a little more, you can get one with a logo from just about any of the armed services. Refills cost $7 for most of the basic beer flavors and just a little more for the seasonals. Honestly, I don’t think you can beat a deal like that on micro-brewed beer.
So if you are in or around the Fredericksburg, Virginia area, it is definitely worth a trip over to the Blue and Gray Brewery for a tour and to check out some of their delicious brews.
