Liquor Review: Captain Morgan Private Stock

Captain Morgan's Private Stock     Yaaarrggg!  Ahoy maties, I be a captain on a swashbuckler ship.  When ye be wanting to learn about rum ye best be talking to a pirate.  Avast if ye be forgetting that us pirates know rum like we know booty plundering.  When I plan to be out pirating around in me ship, I always make sure I load up on Captain Morgan Private Stock when I be in port.  Well, I make me crew do all the loading of me ship on account I be spending me time with the wenches, plundering.  Yaaarrggg!

Captain Morgan Private Stock was launched in 1996 and be produced by the Diageo company in Puerto Rico under the name of The Captain Morgan Rum Company.  The distillers know what they be doing as they be making rum since 1944.  They be starting out with some sugar cane molasses, water, mash and yeast.  Once this be distilled, the rum goes into an oak barrel fer aging.  After the rum be aged, a secret mix of island spices be blended in to produce me favorite spiced rum.  As soon as ye uncork the bottle ye can enjoy a strong aroma dominated by vanilla but with an underlying hint of molasses.  It be the best aroma to be found on a swashbuckler ship, but that nay be saying much.  Yaaarrgg!

I like wenches, but nay as much as I be liking rum.  Drinking me rum always be making the wenches look better.  Yaaarrggg!  Avast if ye be thinking that the only reason to drink Private Stock be to make the wenches look good.  This be one of the best sipping rums to be found, and ye best not be sipping on me stash or it will be a walking of the plank fer ye.  If ye be drinking it straight, then ye be experiencing flavors of mostly sweet molasses with a hint of vanilla and spice.  The strong vanilla aroma not be carrying over to an overpowering vanilla taste.  The overall flavor be smooth and mellow and ye only be getting a slight hint of the alcohol burn.  Ye best be careful not to get carried away by the ease Private Stock be going down.  Aye, she be packing an 80-proof punch, and she be making you wobble when you walk if you have more than a few.  Yaaarrggg!  She nay be so strong that ye be tipping over loaded to the gunwales, though.  If ye be setting sail early the next morning, this rum be a good choice as she will take it easy on ye the morning after a long night of drinking.

Captain Morgan Private Stock be making fer a good mixing rum if ye want to add it to cola.  It also be making a fantastic egg nog fer me swashbuckler party fer me friends and wenches.  However, if ye really want to be getting the most out of ye Private Stock, I suggest just drinking it straight as everything just dilutes the already delicious flavors.

Captain Morgan Private Stock be a staple on my swashbuckler ship, fer meself of course.  I make me crew drink RonRico on account they nay be worth the $26 a fifth this rum be costing.  Aye, she be great fer mixing and she be even better on the rocks.  So the next time ye be in port visiting the wenches, pick ye up a bottle before ye go back to pirating.  Yaaarrggg!

I had to try this after reading the review. It’s much better than the Captain’s regular spiced rum. It’s smoother going down.

This stuff is like sweet sweet candy. The other night, we were playing Rock Band for the X-Box 260 (Guitar Hero with drums and vocals for those who don’t know), and when the Jaeger ran out, we began passing around a bottle of this. The bottle was gone by the end of the night.

Absolutely vile. The taste isn’t bad but neither me nor anyone I know has ever managed to down this poison without severe illness.

I’ll stick with the regular Captain.

i mix this stuff w/ lots of ice and a splash of ginger ale,
always a good night w/ private stock…i never get ‘’sloppy” off this and i can even still play guitar after a bottle.

gets a 9 and 1/2 in my drunken opinion.

Aye, this here’s me most favorite liquor! It goes down more than a wee bit smooth and makes me all warm and tingly and… where’s the captain????

I am a petite woman and this NEVER gives me a hangover in the morning. It’s very smooth, and I love the vanilla undertones. It’s a definite 9 1/2 in my pirate scroll!

Just jammin to some Slipknot, sipping my Private Stock after work, not a care in the world…. I drink this sweet innocence in a bottle before bed. “Night-cap,” I believe it is called, which is a term invented by alcoholics to describe, “Drinking-to-go-to-sleep.” Well, without the sound of bombs going off by my head I’ve been having a bit of difficult with it myself…. How about a night-cap!? (Get the pun, night CAP, like the Cap’n himself!) Welcome to my Hell people, welcome to my nightmare! Peace is inside Captain Morgan’s Private Stock…. Solutions are only one sip away!

I manage a retail liquor store and we always have people from various vendors/companies pouring things to sample. I’ve tried everything from rot gut vodka to the tiniest taste of Johnnie Walker Blue.

While scotch isn’t my bag, this is is the first liquor that I can sip on straight up with no chaser. I’ve had several other rums, Pyrate, Diplomatico, etc. but this one takes the cake.

At the end of the day, drink what you like… and this does it for me.

    Cheers.

This rum is probably my favorite of all. Incredibly smooth, to the point of being surprising. It often makes me wonder if I’m drinking at all. Minutes later when the alcohol begins to catch up to me, I’m reminded I have been. If I could only drink one type of booze, for the rest of my life, this would be it. Never once has it given me a hangover (Though that typically isn’t a problem for me, it still is a concern from time to time.) It’s definitely worth the few extra dollars to step up from the Captain Morgan original. In closing, it be the only rum that gets me outta me bunk in the mornin’!

Well one night I was drinking ye old Private Stock and I ended up finishing the bottle. I then remembered I had a bottle of the “regular Captain” in the freezer, sweet!!! not really… I poured ye a glass and went to sip it.I about spit it out and that’s about as far as ye got with that.It tasted SO bad I actually checked the bottle for an expiration date which there wasn’t one.I’m sorry but I think ye pallet is forever changed to only accept CMPS and frankly I’m okay with that.So the moral of this story is DON’T “EVER” RUN OUT OF PRIVATE STOCK.

    Jay

P.S. Try Private Stock and Coke Plus together it’s deeelish.

P.S P.S Why don’t more Bars and Nighclubs carry CMPS????

Aye, I purloined this particular bounty along with a bottle of Sailor Jerry. The Sailor has been relegated to a flask rum, and this has been put on me top shelf, fer special occasions.

You know.. with as much as you say you enjoy rum, I find myself rather surprised that you haven’t reviewed my favorite one yet – Sailor Jerry. Who doesn;t love a 92-proof spiced rum that can be thoroughly enjoyed mixed or on the rocks?

I used to love this stuff, but really, this is a great liquor for the noob drinker only. Once you develop a taste and palette for other rums and liquors this just doesn’t cut it anymore. Well at least for me. Seriously now it tastes way too artificial; like vanilla syrup and too much sugar. if you have to artificially flavor to the point where it doesn’t taste even like rum, then that really doesn’t say much about whats really inside the bottle. It’s not bad by any means, hell no. But if I’m going to be drinking spiced rum then it’s Sailor Jerry for me.

Sipping on it neat right now. I just had some Flor de Cana Grand Reserve 7 Year two hours ago. The CMPS is better in my book. The Flor de Cana really can’t cut it neat, it needs the ice. CMPS does everything well and is tastier while doing it.

The pirate talk kills the reviews. Seriously lame!

This rum goes down easy and makes you come back for more. I haven’t gotten drunk enough on it yet to comment on it’s hang-over.

Easily on par with Havana Club 7yrs.

I had some Private Stock neat at a party last night. It is not bad, smooth and sweet, but a bit on the thin side. My favorite spiced rum continues to be Sailor Jerry.

I bought a couple of bottles of this stuff, in the UK, last year. I drank one and sold the other to a mate. I am an experienced rum drinker and PS, just has a taste, that is fake, to me. Artificial is the word I’m looking for.

Can you do a review of the regular Captain Morgan? It’d be good to have to compare to the other Captain products you have posted on here. Thanks, I love this site.
